Warmest regards for 2013 from the home of more than 60
Ensigns, notably the largest fleet of Ensigns in the largest class of full keel
boats in North America. Congratulations to Foxy Lady
skipper, Tom LaBelle, and owner/crew member, Frank LaBelle, for their 2012
National Regatta Championship. For those looking ahead, the 2013 National
Regatta is in New Jersey and 2014 is in nearby Pentwater, MI.
Our local 2012 race season saw 24 Ensigns racing during
the fleet regatta. It’s a great testament to all boats, skippers, and crew who
participate in club events. Thanks go out to our race sponsor, the Les Cheneaux
Yacht Club, and the many volunteers who organize and carry out the Ensign racing
season.
We are now looking at the lowest ever recorded water level
for Lake Huron. Here are two useful websites to view past and current levels:
US Army Corps of Engineers and
NOAA
The drop in water levels since 1996 is changing boating in
the Les Cheneaux Islands. While we’ve enjoyed sailing during several recent hot
and dry summers, we now hope and pray for wet and cold weather to replenish lake
levels. While it is a skipper’s prerogative to put his boat aground, we all
prefer a greater cushion below our keels.
